Briar Rose

 Hi everyone!

I've been working on something in silence for a while and would love to finally share here! (Been very silent even on my social media..) Summer convention season is getting closer, so it's now or never to start making costumes! The first one for this Summer for me is Briar Rose, or Aurora from Sleeping Beauty! Yes! My first Disney cosplay! 

There are many reasons for this character specifically, the original idea came while playing Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Always wanted to cosplay a Disney princess at some point so I raided my fabric stash and surprise surprise! I have something I can finally put to use. Also Don calls me "Prinsessa Ruusunen" (finnish version of Sleeping Beauty) since I'm a heavy sleeper and always tired, so there's that too. He chuckled while I was making this.

I love her princess gown (has been one of my favorites since I was a kid!), but right now I don't have fabrics for a pink or blue one (or money to buy any..). It's alright though, I really like "Briar's" outfit. ^^

Starting from the fabrics, as I stated earlier, everything's from my fabric stash. I've been feeling very anxious over it and would really like to reduce it as much as possible before heading to fabric store. This being said I would also like to say the colors seem to change from refernce to reference, so I am taking some liberties with the fabric choices. 

The skirt I think is actually grey, but I've seen other cosplayers use a very muted, dusty pink or purple. I've actually had this kind of purple in my stash since forever, so I would love to finally use it for something. Same kind of liberties are also taken with the shirt under the black corset. If I were to buy fabrics for this, I think I would've looked for something closer to what I used for my Melina cosplay (I actually looked and didn't have nearly enough left), but I can live with the current shirt. :3

Fabrics used!

I wanted to make a circle skirt, but there was simply not enough fabric, so a gathered rectangle skirt it is. The skirt seems to have some pleats in the front, so I tried to mimic that. Honestly it is pretty and I'm happy with my seams and hem, but I might want to unravel it and make it into half-circle skirt. Not now though.

I kept it simple with the shirt and scarf. I already have a shirt pattern I could use, just added a collar. The scarf I pulled out of my closet. It's a little see-through, but it's light and does the job for now.

Sleeves are missing buttons and closing hook on the back, but those are small things to add.

The it was time to make my first corset! Thank you internet for the ton of beginner friendly tutorials with proper explanations! Started from patterning and a mock up.

The lace in front is purely decorative.

Aurora also needs hair. I only have platinum blonde wigs, which isn't my preference. Thanks to Firith I didn't have to order a new one. You see, we've been doing some wig exhanges and his old Avalon-cosplay wig had the perfect shade! The only downside is that it has a middle part, but I was able to work with it.

It was definitely a challenge trying to hide the middle part. I "forced" a small section of hair to lay on front and it kinda worked. Just used flat iron and shit tons of hairspray! The bangs are not moving!

I'm so happy how this turned out! I might buy a thicker hairband, but I'm not prioritizing it right now. I feel adorable and really like how everything fits. Can't wait to wear her at Hypecon this weekend! Hopefully I'll get at least a couple "proper" pictures of this outfit.
